People with severe disabilities, such as tetraplegia, generally find it extremely difficult to carry out daily tasks without receiving continuous help. In order to move around in home, office, and outdoor environments, these individuals are completely dependent on their electrically powered wheelchairs (PWCs). PWCs are the most helpful tools allowing individuals to complete daily tasks with greater independence, and to access school, work, and community environments. The default method for controlling a PWC is by using a joystick, which requires a certain level of physical movement ability in the upper limbs, which may not exist in people with severe disabilities. A good solution to this problem is to make the wheelchair voice controlled.
